If 80s synth infused dream pop from the ilk of artists like Robyn, Keisza, La Roux, makes your ears prick up and your booty wiggle then Shura is a wonderful addition to your collection. Following on from 2Shy, ‘White Light’ is a perfect slo-mo disco meets alternative indie groove that could easily pump out of car stereos, gas stations, radio stations and festival stages without jarring the ear. It swirls around you like the pool around Narcissus, offering sparkling, crystal clear water and nourishment on hot day – tempting to the max, yet somehow out of reach. Leap fully clothed and unashamedly into it to feel refreshed as your wet clothes cool and dry in its radiant sunshine. Shura’s voice is soft yet assured, there’s a rocking guitar section to twist it beyond disco and it is so catchy you will happily leave it on repeat play. Add the Gabe Gurnsey Factory Floor remix which loops and snips the vocal, whilst layering it over an industrial thud, stripped down hi nrg bass line wave and more cowbell than a swiss pasture and you have the recipe for a steamy dance off anywhere from Berghain to Brixton. It’s a hit. At least it is in my books.
