Steve Bug flexes his sun-drenched deep house muscles with his Coconut Paradise EP. The title track shimmers in that hazy, wavering heat or water road effect way. It’s a mid-day to sunset affair perfumed with synth pads and suntan lotion, moody Moog sustained notes like melting ice creams in the ehat and keys that make it as glad and happy as a chilled glass of rosé on a sandy table. ‘Thick As Mud’ is dense and gritty with cycling, polyrhythmic beats that swirl like sediment in a quicksand whirlpool. ‘Pants On Fire’ is a steel drum and tribal rhythm driven safari through an uncharted psychological jungle. Scratching strings, bleepy harmonic then dissonant keys and a menacing, growling bottom end all add to the psychosis. It’s a beginning to end triptych that innocently sets the scene, gets involved and changes the mood then ups the gear to twist your melon. I like.
