Steve Lawler

R&S

Ribcage-rattling barrages of percussion have always been a surefire way of inspiring berserk cavorting on the dancefloor but, since the tribal craze of the 90s, it really has to be well done not to sound like pushing the obvious buttons. From his position behind the decks at Space with some of the most unbridled insanity known to man going on before him week after week, Steve Lawler has a better idea than most what strafes a floor and, in his never-ending mission to inject filth and excitement into house music’s abused buttocks, has created another monster. Not only that it’s on the mighty R&S [who have hopefully recovered from the recent collapse of the Pinnacle distribution company]. A lengthy intro sets the mood with Latin percussion percolating and bubbling before shadowy riffs kick in and mayhem commences with roof-raising re-entry action after the drop. The dub spotlights intricate drum manoeuvres with classic NYC deep house sensibilities washing around for some sublime early hours action. Shed’s remix manages to concoct a minimal-tribal hybrid which also displays severe damage potential. Steve’s had a dynamite year but, around these parts, this and the Sci+Tec outing catapult him into the upper echelons, certainly deserving of a Blue Peter cod-piece.
