Various Artists – A Tribute To Klang Club (Unclear Records)

We’ve never heard of Unclear records before or Klang Club, which is the Tuscan rave den that this six track sampler from the label is a tribute to. But you take notice of the cast list on this meaty near half hour of grooves and we delved into have a listen. The tracks are all pretty varied, with the Roman Flugel effort good but not for us, Baby Ford’s number really well produced but hard to imagine anyone actually dancing to, and Hearthrob turning out some decent noir tackle, but the only one that gets us high fiving each other is Okain’s ‘Livin Proof’.

Now usually we want to impale the lungs of anyone who uses the prefix ‘proper’ to denote any kind of music to a rusty spike, but this is ‘proper’ house. It’s clean without being too sterile, managing to be crisp and warm at the same time. It’s got natty percussion, one heck of a groove, lush stabs, a sharp burst of sax and swing by the bucket load, and it’s the kind of record we want to grab a delorean and go to Tisno next July to drop on a boat party. Instead we’re cracking open the prosecco in our studio pretending we’re there for six minutes. Well worth checking.

Autocycle 4/5 (for the Okain track)
