Zomby
Dedication
4AD

Another week, another producer whose identity we don’t know? Well yes – but once again it’s a cause for celebration rather than worry, as Zomby proves himself to be a music maker of skill and dexterity. Dedication has it all really – klaxons and pistols on some of the more extravert tracks, soft pianos on the more inward looking ones. Dubstep is probably the label of choice, but only with the qualification that these days dubstep is more flexible than ever before. The beats, largely broken, trip along with nervous energy, at times resorting to a more solid, garage-derived four to the floor. Likewise the textures vary from the strangely haunting ‘Natalia’s Song’, one of the few vocal tracks here, to the richly colourful ‘Lucifer’. Occasionally ‘Dedication’ struggles for focus, but maybe that’s the listener’s reaction when presented with music that flits around rather than settling, and ends up being more intriguing than ever. With no padding, it makes a fine second album for a producer of some talent.
