Janne Tavi ft. Robert Owens ‘The Other Man’ (IBADAN)

Attention! This is probably the best Vocal House record of the entire year. A record that has written CLASSIC written all over it, a record that could well have been produced 25 years ago by some guys like Frankie Knuckles or David Morales. A record that sounds a lot like that classic Def Mix sound, that made the production collective consisting of the crème de la crème of US house music what it is today. Nevertheless the mentioned icons don’t have to do with Ibadan’s greatest signing in a long time, it is Finnish young lad Janne Tavi who gets the very best of out of one of one of those classic vocal artists, legendary Robert Owens. Probably the track would have been a decent tune back in time, but today it is outstanding with all the cheap tracks flying around each and every week. That’s why it deserves a lot of attention. Classic pianos work a treat with spheric layers, classic drum programming and a nice, but not too aggressive bass on the Main Mix. The ‘Vocal Dub’ is a stripped back affair, which in general keeps the sublime instrumentation of the Main Mix, but uses only snippets of Roberts vox. On top of it you get two Kerri Chandler mixes, who seems to be aware of the speciality of the track by delivering deeper, more club friendly mixes that are of the quality you expect. Finally it has to be said that respect goes out to Ibadan and Jerome Sydenham for the signing, I hope it gets the recognition it deserves…
