‘Watts Happening’ picks up where the inventive debut ‘The Find’ left off for Ohmega Watts. The prodigiously talented wordsmith shows an extraordinary flexibility with musical styles, most contained within hip hop rhythms. The original sounds include cleverly filtered brass (2), the masterly (5) with its jazzy strains as Watts raps about “trying to be a model citizen” and the bolder, rolling beats of (7), which cleverly flicks between speeds. Watts is always looking to push boundaries, but does so in a natural and exciting way as he gets his message across.
