Manchester’s Doves make a tremendous return with the release of the title cut from their superb forthcoming new LP “Kingdom Of Rust”. In it’s original form it’s a bit Johnny Cash, a bit Ennio Morricone and a whole lot of “Lost Souls”, with brooding atmospherics and majestic melodies rising and dipping over rolling rolling rolling rhythms and Spanish guitars with great effects. Go Jimi go. On the remix front Prins Thomas tackles “Kingdom Of Rust” and delivers a couple of stunners, simmering with a subtle 4/4 kick and teasing percussion, gradually layering strings, and making the most of the spaghetti western influences, building up to the full song with a rushing your face off round the campfire ending. Over on the flip you’ll find Trevor Jackson under his Playgroup guise, working the bonus track “Push Me On” into a Bobby O influenced 21st century disco meltdown, as bassline synths and steam press handlaps set the scene for a rattling electronic percussion frenzy in deep space, which leads to the grand finale of an out of body experience up amongst the stars. Awesome.
