London’s Guy Benton is the man behind the Guynamite name, releasing his
debut on Nik Weston’s Mukatsuku label after being heard at London’s CDR club
night. Opening track “Those Eyes” is a sure-footed broken boogie tune,
Selina Campbell’s vocals gliding effortlessly across the polished sounds; “A
New Beginning” is an easy going instrumental, jazz guitar flickering over
warm beats; “Take Your Time” is a simple soul workout with a classic vibe
that stands out through dreamy piano and a hooky brass chorus; “I’ll Be
Gone” is fronted by Selina Campbell again on a nice, minimal ballad, which
leaves “Daybreak” to finish the EP in introspective downtempo mode. Modern
soul on a superb bargain for money EP – Mukatsuku is definitely one of the
best independents around right now.
