Stuart Cullen has found a new home for his Pilote outfit, and after a gap of over four years, he’s back with some newly recorded material for Kennington. “By The River” finds Cullen on vocal duties in the finest tradition of comedy-pop situationists like Ivor Cutler and Vivian Stanshall, reciting nursery rhyme like couplets over a folksy backing that gets repeatedly kicked by a great 80’s electro styled bassline. The second track, “Coltrane”, displays more of Cullen’s wilfully obtuse beats and humour amidst cosy sounding chords and half-heard vocal phrases.
