The eco-warrior returns, this time on his own label – with an album whose inspiration comes directly from the film director David Lynch. After listening to Lynch Moby decided he wanted to make a record without any pressure or concern over how it was going to be received. It’s no surprise, then, to report that ‘Wait For Me’ is a pretty relaxed affair, making the most of Moby’s talents for orchestration. The largely ambient sound pictures are given the occasional spiritual air, or a touch of the blues – and the vocals, all sung by friends, are subtly effective. When ‘Mistake’ pleads “don’t let me make the same mistake again” there’s a frisson of deeper emotion, and when the beats get faster, as they do occasionally, the sense of building excitement arrives quickly. That said this self production is largely surface level, atmospheric chillout material – and is none the worse for it, as that’s the music Moby seems to do best.
