A well-seasoned taster of what the Brighton label Cookshop have taken an ear to recently, starting with the wonderful “Luskus Problem” from Norway’s Implosion Quintet, a short – yet very sweet – flirt with cinematic funk, like John Barry being chased through the KPM’s backcatalogue. The wickedly named Scarf Face delivers the beat laden “Persian Shadows”. Outerlectual’s “Hey Mister” is a supreme slice of balearic niceness, full of relaxed atmospheres, and effortlessly capturing a sunny feeling. Elemental’s “Grand Tour” is an addictive rap review of the inner-workings of one man’s mind. La Femme delivers with a bossa-Blue Note like D&B moment on “My Soul”, leaving Implosion Quintet to close in style with “Phase Out”. A hefty package of music for one single disc – every turntable should have one.
