When Mr Harris released ‘Acceptable In The ’80s’ he was wearing his credentials and influences for all to see. Ironically his debut single is one of the most ‘sophisticated’ offerings on an album that goes back-to-basics both musically and lyrically. Somewhere between the inventiveness of Mylo and originality of Daft Punk resides Calvin Harris. Less commercial then the former and without the Gallic je ne sais quoi of the latter. His tracks are pure old school sounding with the minimal technology of the ’80s matching his equally sparing lyrics. ‘Vegas’, ‘The Girls’ and ‘Merrymaking At My Side’ penned from the most simplistic of perspectives. That said there’s something reassuringly refreshing about it all that makes it standout from a sea of electro mediocrity and overly elaborate production values.
