‘Tu Amor’ – A Cosmic Rebirth of a House Classic
When musical worlds collide, magic happens. The latest release from Luke Una’s É Soul Cultura label, in partnership with Mr Bongo, is a testament to this cosmic serendipity. ‘Tu Amor,’ a tripped-out, Spanish-language reinterpretation of Jamie Principle & Frankie Knuckles’ legendary ‘Your Love,’ finally lands on 12” vinyl after quietly simmering in the digital ether since 2012. And it’s every bit as spellbinding as you’d hope.
Originally crafted by Chilean DJ, producer, and vocalist Mamacita (Carolina Vallejos) alongside producer Sebastian Roman (Persona RS), ‘Tu Amor’ is a raw, lo-fi homage to one of house music’s most iconic tracks. Recorded on a battered old Windows laptop with a borrowed Neumann microphone, it captures the DIY spirit of early Chicago house, infused with the cosmic, sun-drenched vibes of Santiago’s underground scene. The result? A quirky, hypnotic journey through squelching synth lines and Carolina’s ethereal Spanish vocals that swirl together in a heady, Balearic dreamscape.
Despite its brilliance, ‘Tu Amor’ initially flew under the radar, circulating mostly among Latin American and a handful of US DJs. But fate had other plans. After DJ and record collector Steve KIW tipped off Mr Bongo, and a chance encounter at La Paloma ballroom saw Luke Una drop it at the peak of his set, ‘Tu Amor’ was destined for a resurrection. Luke recalls, “There was a real charm to it… a huge wonkiness and just sounded so DIY in a brilliant way.” Inspired by its unorthodox arrangement, he teamed up with Luke Solomon (Classic Music) to create an extended club re-edit, accentuating the wonky cosmic synths and transforming it into a fierce underground club tool while preserving its otherworldly allure.
This isn’t just a cover – it’s a cosmic reinterpretation, a love letter to the past, and a future dancefloor anthem all rolled into one. É Soul Cultura continues to surprise and delight, and ‘Tu Amor’ is the perfect next chapter in their journey of musical discovery.
