VARIOUS ARTISTS – DJ KICKS: MICHAEL MAYER – !K7

Michael Mayer’s contribution to the DJ Kicks series has been worth waiting for. Over the course of the set he paces the build up to perfection, moving from the pleasant and slightly experimental trombone tones of Peter Zummo to gradually bring in the stronger, more defined house beats. He spends a good deal of time with Kasper Bjørke, his own remix of ‘Apart’ leaving a strong marker with its ‘nothing’s going to trouble my heart, now that we have grown apart’ hook line. The mix gets more powerful at this point, with Prins Thomas’ excellent remix of Lionheart Brothers’ ‘The Drift’ moving towards two winners in Ratcliffe’s remix of Throbbing Gristle’s ‘Hot On The Heels Of Love’ and Chris & Cosey’s take on Death In Vegas’ ‘Consequences Of Love’. We end with the dreamy Moderat mix of Jon Hopkins’ ‘Abandon Window’. Mayer has a lot of fun here, and the DJ Kicks format suits him down to the ground.
