Baggi Begovic

One of the most prolific producers in EDM keeps rolling them out

Adjin, welcome to DMCWORLD towers. It’s Miami week, ready for the madness?

“Hi Dan, I’m currently on my way to sunny Miami! Judging on my previous visits to the Winter Music Conference, you know it’s Miami so I’m sure it’s going to be wild as always, maybe even better this year!”

Two massive tunes sitting in The Buzz ‘Miami Day & Night’ Charts out on Stealth and Ultra – talk us through these two monsters…

“I can’t be more satisfied with the releases so far coming out of the studio! First time that I’m charted with two completely different tracks, “Give It To Me” on Stealth records is a far more disco-house orientated project perfect for that Miami beach feel and couldn’t resist going back to my old filtered house sound as inspiration for the track.  “Freefalling” on Spinnin’ Records is quite the opposite, I use this as a big room banger in my sets more of a bigger vocal with breakdowns on the progressive side, can’t believe it is now already charted as the official date is April 23rd. Also check out the tracks I’ve done with Miss Nine “Hit The Road” (Zouk Recordings) and the one I did with Robbie Taylor – an Australian based female vocalist “Automatic” (Nervous Records) – both still riding high in my charts and a regular favorites in my sets.”

Where can we find you spinning in Miami this week?

“Tuesday I’m at Miami Massive at Nikki Beach and a party down at Dream on Washington later on. Wednesday is Stealth at The Fountainebleau and the GF Recordings Pool Party at The Victor Hotel. Thursday Roger Sanchez’s private pool party at The Setai, Kingdom in da House at The Queen Lounge and the Nervous Festival at Karu & Y Ultralounge. Friday I’m back at The Victor Hotel for a party that escapes me, Saturday another Kingdom party at the Queen Lounge and Sunday the Mixology Cloding at Mekka Miami. A busy week.”

Who are you looking forward to hooking up out in the sun?

“My aim is to see as much people as I can during the week trying to expand my network for future releases and have a few drinks and laughs as well, don’t forget it’s only once a year WMC.”

What are the other Miami bombs you have up your sleeve you’re going to unveil…

“With music all happening so fast, you’re always looking for good stuff. Think my release featuring PHATT  “Chasing The Sun”  definitely will get some plays!”

We love you at DMC and regard you as the hardest producer we know, you have tunes mapped out already for the rest of the year – what can we look forward to?

“Thanks for your nice words. My goal and focus for 2012 (and forthcoming years) is to up my game with productions and remixes. So far confirmed is my remix for American R&B singer JoJo “Disaster” coming out on Interscope USA, the remix I did for Erick Morillo and Eddie Thoneick feat. Skin “If This Ain’t Love” (Baggi Begovic Remix) on Stealth Records to name a few. Also been asked to do stuff for labels like Spinnin’ Records, Musical Freedom and many more – my ballroom book is getting quite full!”

You migrated from your native Bosnia in the mid 90s to Rotterdam – why did you choose The Netherlands and who did you travel over with?

“In the mid 90’s Bosnia was a very bad place to be living in, I’ve seen terrible things happening there and even know memories still haunt me. My mother and my sister decided to leave everything behind us and built up a completely new life in The Netherlands.”

Is there anything you miss about your home country, do you ever go back?

“I’ve just arrived back from doing two great gigs over there, the food is fresh and amazing. As everybody knows I’m a massive food lover.”

You must have gained a knowledge of dance music back in Bosnia before the move though?

“I started out as a 9 year old music fanatic in Bosnia, where I had my little record player and a collection of records from all over the world, I’ve visited some and danced in some pretty strange places there.”

What do you love and hate about living in Rotterdam?

“There’s no place like Rotterdam, that’s where my heart and home is! Every city has it’s ups and setbacks but I couldn’t live anywhere else.”

What is the current top 10 you are spinning?

“Check out my top ten for Miami here:

What was your first break into the music industry?

“My first gig was in a Rotterdam based club called De Boot Barocca around 1999, it was my first time behind real decks and playing my favourite selection of music to a very knowledgeable crowd.”

Which producers around the world are you ginning high fives to at the moment?

“Can’t emphasize enough how so proud of our Dutch producers, I think we’ve moved along quite a notch during the years. Too many to mention, but hey guys, you know who you are!”

You have remixed the likes of Christine Aguilera, Donna Summer and Sandy Rivera to name but a few. Some big names in there…

“When I received those requests for remixing these big artists whose records I was playing, it was a huge honor for me. Strangest thing with the music industry is that tracks need to be finished like yesterday and you’re getting calls from managers and all sorts of A&R people. OK, remix is done then you sit around and wait, wait to fit in their schedule to be released. Luckily nowadays with all the internet, downloading and illegal file sharing (Megaupload anyone?) things are much more quicker.”

What is the greatest record you have ever played to a dance floor?

“Donna Summer “I Feel Love”.

How long had the idea of the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” remix been in your head. Were you surprised at it’s global popularity – surely not with a Nirvana classic?

“That acapella was a dream come true, been chasing that for years in my head to do something with that. René Amesz and I made that track as a little secret weapon to be played just for the festival season in 2010,  the response and demand overwhelmed us when we got swamped with requests from big DJs like Tiësto, Roger Sanchez and Erick Morillo. I really couldn’t imagine that it would so big!”

You are in the Guinness Book Of World Records for chartering a plane on the way to Miami and at 11.582  meters basically had a party and set a record for high altitude DJing. What was that experience like and have you any other mad ideas up your sleeve?

“Yeah that was great, still sends shivers down my spine. It was a special party organized by my sponsors Spincity (thanks Willem and crew!), we took over the complete airplane charted by KLM and rocked it,  it’s my Mile High Club adventure (nudge nudge!). I’m still working on some new and mad ideas, will update you as soon as the pieces will fall together, maybe a deep sea experience hahaha.”

You have DJd at every major festival worth playing at – Creamfields, Dance Valley, Global etc. What is your favourite festival experience that we can print?

“Very difficult question to answer as I’ve played so many festivals over the years and overall my experience was always great. If you press me real hard, for Holland I have to say “Extrema Festival” in Eindhoven, the atmosphere is always great, nice people and can’t remember any bad weather happening over the years. Internationally “Global Gathering” stands out for me though, really good memories playing over there!”

And finally, why do you think your sound is loved the world over?

“Guess it has to do with my upbringing listening to so many different music and sounds, that progressed into my love of seeing people enjoying themselves on the dancefloor while playing records. mmmm really deep thought there…I’ll save that for my autobiography…haha…”
