The Belgian brothers gathering Momentum
Belgian brothers Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike have come a very long way in a very short period of time. In just 2 years, they’ve bypassed the usual steps to making it big by proving they have super-star quality in everything they do. They are sought after producers, remixers to the A-list elite and number 1 hit makers. The accolades they’ve clocked up within this relatively short time are equal to those some DJ stalwarts amass during a lifetime. And they are back with a big room monster!
Words : Dan Prince
Hi boys, welcome back to DMC. Miami coming up, we know that the WMC is more about profile and the party rather than business deals, is it the most important date on the dance calendar still?
“Definitely. We have a very busy month in the USA between touring with Steve Aoki and festivals like Escape From Wonderland and LED. But the cherry on the cake is of course WMC.”
As thousands of next generation clubbers descend on the big events, do you feel the spirit of house music is being lost to a crowd looking for that instant anthem hit?
“Nah not really, We’ve lived in Ibiza for so many years and looking back you had your big ‘summer Ibiza hits’ that almost every DJ would play – the only difference is they would almost never reach the radio back then and there was no internet so every person would immediately know the name and be able to download it. I don’t really see what the big problem is. We just released a fully instrumental version of our new track ‘Momentum’ and it entered the Belgian charts after one week at No.8 and is in high rotation on the biggest radio’s. That is something that would have been unthinkable 10 years ago.”
Have you had to change your musical direction in the last year?
“Not really, we always do what we do…”
Is Miami losing it’s trademark cool and sexy house music vibe?
“Absolutely not. It’s still one of the best places to be like the rest of the States where house music has completely took over. All the venues have traded their hip hop nights for house and that why a lot of new artists get to play in some of the best clubs around because the target audience has multiplied.”
What are your thoughts on the Dennis Ferrer ‘Mansion’ Miami club story – he was basically kicked off the decks for not playing commercial enough…
“We know the Opium guys very well and they are very good people, I’m sure the whole story rests on a misunderstanding…Dennis is also a great artist and a great guy, so I’m sure they’ve worked everything out by now.”
With clubs and charts being dominated by dance music worldwide, shouldn’t we be rejoicing it’s success rather than being bitter with crossover?
“Of course, it’s great times for all of us. Some people have an issue ‘sharing’ their beloved house music…of course sometimes you get certain crossbreed abominations on the radio, but bad music has been around all of the time!! It’s up to the DJs to make a proper selection and not just go by the charts…”
The party you looking forward to the most?
“Pfff…there are so many. When we look at our schedule for this year we see so many of the events we always dreamed of playing…it’s insane!”
What are your Buzz tracks for WMC 2012?
“Dimitri Vegas, Like Mike & Regi – ‘Momentum’ ( Clockwork Remix )
Have you noticed a big dip in industry folk not attending these last couple of years?
“For us it’s re-uniting wth colleagues and friends and have a lot of fun…maybe a bit of networking here and there, but mostly fun!! I have to confess, we never really vistit the conference…too drunk for that most of the time…”
What are your thoughts on the IMS in Ibiza? Will you be attending?
“Never been there before…this year we might go for the first time. heard a lot of great things… but we can’t judge something we haven’t experienced yet..”
