Miami 2012 – Musical Freedom

Tiesto’s label gets set for a huge Conference

We know that the WMC is more about profile and the party rather than business deals, is it the most important date on the dance calendar still?

“There isn’t necessarily a “most important” date. Every conference/festival has it’s own strong points but I think we all go into it with the same motivation to meet with the outstanding people in our industry and hear amazing music.”

As thousands of next generation clubbers descend on the big events, do you feel the spirit of house music is being lost to a crowd looking for that instant anthem hit?

“Not at all. The spirit of house music is rooted in bringing people together. To say that these huge events with tens of thousands of people partying together and having amazing nights as a community isn’t in line with the spirit of house music is ridiculous. We’re lucky to have a diverse enough art form where everyone is able to find something that suits them. The increasing profile of dance music is something to celebrate.”

Have you had to change your musical direction in the last year?

“No. Our ambition as a label is to help curate the direction.   From that standpoint, we’ve of course let our sound evolve and grow naturally.”

Is Miami losing it’s trademark cool and sexy house music vibe?

“There’s nowhere quite like Miami, it will always have it’s vibe.”

With clubs and charts being dominated by dance music worldwide, shouldn’t we be rejoicing it’s success rather than being bitter with crossover?

“Isn’t that what we’re doing? There will always be people upset with change, that’s natural. If you don’t like something, don’t listen to it. As a community we need to be able to support each other, regardless of personal taste. Someone will always be creating music you like, spend your energy finding those artists rather than being jaded about something that is ultimately good for all styles of dance, mainstream as well as underground.”

The party you looking forward to the most?

“The Musical Freedom party at Arkadia on Friday March 23rd. We have a secret line-up of six of our Musical Freedom artists and a special guest. It’s basically a main stage festival line-up in a 400 person room. Going to be a lot of fun, more info here: http://bit.ly/wSisQy
