What did I do last weekend?
“I zipped over to Atlanta for this year’s A3C festival. First, I participated in a panel about issues facing the modern DJ alongside heavy hitters like Apple Jac, Green Lantern, Kelly G, DJ Trackster and more. Then, I gave a product demo for Traktor (that’s Traktor, folks. Traktor). Finally I dropped a 20 minute showcase at the festival’s Needle To The Record DJ Battle. Oh what a glorious time!
I ate all my meals in Atlanta at the same restaurant: R.Thomas Deluxe Grill, a health-oriented 24 HOUR eatery. I wish I could eat there every meal. Seriously if it delivered to my NYC apartment, I would eat there every meal.
Now, you might be saying, “Shiftee, what are you a wimp? Eating healthy!?!?!? Isn’t that for sissies?” Look, I’ve finally reached the point in my life where I need to eat better. In my younger days, I would order a cheeseburger and then replace the side salad with an additional side cheeseburger. Now, I order a cheeseburger with a side salad and substitute another side salad for the cheeseburger. It’s called maturity.”

Buraka Som Sistema (ft. Blaya & Roses Gabor) – (We Stay) Up All Night
I think most doctors agree: staying up all night is bad for you. I’m a little worried about Buraka Som Sistema. Are they getting enough sleep? Are their bodies well rested? Health concerns aside, Buraka is continuing its run of making straight up anthems. Both the song and video for this one are awesome. Buraka’s on top of the world right now.
Conner Youngblood – Australia
In college, I would have listened to this song nonstop. Now I’m more into raging bangers, baby making music, avoiding scholarly essays at all costs, and songs that feature the lyric “Google my ass.” Still this song has me hooked. Pensive and light, Conner Youngblood’s Australia is strikingly beautiful and nostalgic. This track should be the score for a montage during a Sofia Coppala movie (that’s soooo something I would have said in college).
Goth Trad – Sublimation
Goth Trad’s Babylon Fall EP is crazy dope! I’m on board with every tune. Wikipedia (source of all truth) defines the word “sublimation” as “the process of transition of a substance from the solid phase to the gas phase without passing through an intermediate liquid phase.” Yo that’s exactly what this song sounds like! F%&k the liquid phase! No more urination for me, just farting.
Gun Selectah – Villa Ghetto (Matt Shadetek Remix)
Gangster & weird. That’s how I like it, and that’s how Shadetek lays it down on this remix for the Mexicans With Guns + Toy Selectah collabo Gun Selectah (bad ass name, btw). I love the tension-inducing punctuations of the lead melodic line. I know what you’re thinking. If you love it so much, Shiftee, why don’t you marry it!?!? You called my bluff, reader. I’m not going to marry a sound.
Knight Riderz – For Real
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. High pitched vocals get me every time. And if the vocals say “Baby”!?!?! Forget about it. Throw in a driving midrange bass, and you might as well wipe my memory Momento style. But also like Momento, make sure I leave a bunch of tattoos on my body to remind myself I like this song. Top notch release from Seclusias dropping October 17.
Rick Ross – I Love My Bitches
I never knew Rick Ross was a pet enthusiast. As we all know, the word “bitch” refers to a female dog. Rick doesn’t just love a single bitch. He has more than one bitch, and he loves them all. I wouldn’t be surprised if PETA makes Rick a spokesman after this love letter to the canine species. By the way, do you thinking anyone actually calls him “Rick”? Like “hey, Rick! How’s it hanging? See the game last night?” In all seriousness, the Just Blaze beat is fire, and Rick says a bunch of ridiculous and awesome stuff (e.g. “Barbra Streisand Edition Bentleys”).

The shameless self promotion is never going to end. Don’t judge me. I’m only a human being. A human being who wants love, compassion, hugs . . . and people to buy his EP. Landing Boots is my solo contribution to the Rx & Shiftee Space Ace EP, OUT OCTOBER 17 ON RAD SUMMER RECORDS. My baby making music pick of the week. Yes, I’m picking myself for this week’s baby making pick. Yes, this is a little bit like masturbation. But hey, as Woody Allen says: “Don’t knock masturbation. It’s sex with someone I love.”

Watch out for Cashmere Cat! This guy(/cat) has the talent, catalogue, and range to blow up bigger than my toilet after a super sized burrito HEY NOW! HIT ME UP TOP! The drop here is totally wacky and unexpected, vocal freaks galore. Zeds Dead – Undah Yuh Skirt ft. Movado
Amazing track! Dancehall meets rave banger. I first heard Bare play this song at How Strange 3 in Pittsburgh, and for me it was the standout song of the night. The first halftime drop is just so neck breaking. I’m considering calling one of those 1-800-LAWYER numbers and suing Zeds Dead for whiplash. Get me Seinfeld’s Jackie Chiles on the phone!
