Trolley Snatcha

The dub warrior coming atcha

TrollyDude, welcome to DMC towers. Your name comes from a nickname courtesy of your friends after your time spent stealing Sainsburys ‘ trolleys. Ever get nicked?

“I did some stupid things as a youth and I still don’t feel grown up. But I’m far too stealthy to get nicked Dan.”

The new release comes off the back off a lengthy US tour towards the end of last year, what were the highlights from that little journey?

“I still have vivid memories of the shows in Denver and LA, they were both proper raves! The glaucoma medication was decent too!”

You are back in 2 weeks with Caspa and the crew on the ‘dub police USA Tour 12’ taking in the likes of San Fran, New York and Philly – why do you think the  dubstep  sound has just exploded in the States at the moment? What is it about the sound that has just caught their imagination?

“Yeah I’m really looking forward to getting back over the pond, especially as it’s with the guys from dub police. I guess it’s the same reason it’s catching anyone else’s imagination. Dubstep has so many different meanings to different people, but as it’s such a broad sound that it’s appealing to lots of people.”

A fabulous five track EP swinging our way next week ‘Subtext’. Talk us through this monstrous dub delight…

“I guess for me it was my first serious sit down project as Trolley Snatcha. It took me a while to write but I was happy to spend a little extra time do, so I could get it to sound exactly how I wanted it too. I’m happy with it and I think that’s all that matters at this stage.”

You have been down in Bournemouth after moving there from your hometown of Northampton for uni reasons. Northampton and the surrounding area has quite a history of cool bass producers. Who from the local scene did you grow up hanging with?

“I’m actually now back in the Northampton area after I good few years on the south coast. Well, myself and Flux Pavilion grew up two doors from each other, with Doctor P down the road. But there is a hell of a lot of unknown talent in that part of the country.”

What is your current top 10 you are spinning?

“The first 5 would have to be all the tracks from the upcoming Subtext EP – then literally anything from Subscape. That will give you more than 10 !”

It’s your birthday, what 3 DJs do you invite to play for you?

“This is a hard question to answer. David Rodigan is deffo there tho. Every time I see him I feel like a kid raving again. Then maybe a 4 hour b2b set from Jazzy Jeff and Portishead.”

What is your guilty pleasure song?

“Don’t Stop Belivin’ by Journey. But I only really feel guilty about it since Glee came about….”

You are doing a meet and greet in London next week offering up your production tips. So to the thousands of readers out  there  who want a career in producing, what’s your advice?

“Only to write music that you enjoy writing.”

Other than music, what is your vice?

“I have always been into film and photography. At most gigs I end up pestering the photographers about their camera set ups.”

So non dubstep  – we come back to yours after the gig, what is the Trolley Snatcha Back To Mine tunes you spin us to mellow the groove?

“I would just stick on Hollie Cooks’ self titled album. It can tame any beast.”

What music do you always turn off if it comes on the radio?

“My own, haha. It always makes me uncomfortable, especially if I’m with friends or family.”

Best record you have ever played to a  dancefloor?

“Zapp & Roger – ‘Computer Love’.”

Not many people know this, but Trolley  Snatcha  is really good at…?

“Cooking. I’m basically Gordon Ramsey standard x100 with a sprinkling of Nigella Lawson.”

Who are your musical heroes?

“I’ve got thousands. But right this minute I’m gonna say Joe Strummer!”

And finally, what’s next studio wise from the Snatcha stable in 2012?

“I’m already working on some follow up stuff to the EP. I can’t really say too much yet but I’m excited about it all. Keep a check on trolleysnatcha.com for updates. Big up to all the crew at DMC…”
