“Considering I have been an avid music fan and record collector practically since I learned to walk, these selected tracks below span many decades of my life and countless genres of music. First of all, each of the 10 tracks have a few things in common – 1. I fell for the track IMMEDIATELY, maybe about 20 seconds into the music, if that! 2. I then demanded my father buy the record for me (my family owned a Sears Silvertone 78 rpm record player with an AM and FM tune.). 3. Except for the original few 78 rpm configurations, I still have each original 45 rpm disc in my collection.”
Pearls – Let’s You And I Go Steady – 1956
In 1956 I won an EMERSON AM/FM radio selling magazines at school and as soon as I got it home I started listening to WINS AM’s Alan Freed’s Doo Wop show and Hound Dog Lorenz on WKBW AM out of Buffalo, NY. Doo Woop became my first love! Thus, my first record was a 78 rpm pressing of this record.
Elvis Presley – I Was The One – 1956
As soon as I heard ELVIS sing a ballad I was hooked. I wore out the 78 rpm and then replaced it with a 45 rpm.
Everly Brothers – All I Have To Do Is Dream – 1958
I remember a beautiful summer day in 1958, washing the family car in the driveway and listening to the car radio. This record stopped the washing and the impact of these brothers and their harmony rocked my world forever.
Buffalo Springfield – Expecting To Fly – 1967 (2017 Remaster)
To this day, I am a huge Neil Young fan. This was my first introduction to his voice and his writing. I always wished I could make records like him!
DION – Abraham, Martin and John – 1968
Dion was a brilliant singer and performer. Through the years I have been fortunate to see him in person many, many times. This song and its sentiment, the arrangement and Dion’s vocals never get old.
John Lennon – Mind Games – 1973 (Remastered 2010)
George Harrison is my favourite Beatle but this recording by Lennon instantly grabbed my ear. I played it over and over and over, as one does with a pop single.
The Ritchie Family – Brazil – 1975
Heard it first on a gorgeous summer day in 1975 dancing at the Pavillion in the Fire Island Pines. I had just started getting high and I remember feeling like I could simply fly off the dance floor dancing to this track. Who knew?
First Choice – Doctor Love (Tom Moulton 12″ Mix) – 1977
In my humble opinion, this is the ultimate Tom Moulton remix and the record I remember dancing to most during my visits to Studio 54.
The Weekend – Save Your Tears – 2020
I had pretty much stopped listening to new music for about 35 years after “disco died”. I disliked the British dance efforts and the music being released here in the US didn’t interest me. I reinvented my career path as a photographer and, during this period, I immersed myself in opera and classical music. Then artists like The Weekend came along with his “No More Tears” and I was immediately re-hooked. All of a sudden the music was better than ever.
SIA – Cheap Thrills – 2015
It begins again! One amazing new track after another, witness this SIA’s recording. The magic seemed to be back. I rented an auto for a trip through New England and l blasted this track nonstop all the way to Provincetown and back. We live to dance again!
