James Holden is a man who takes his DJing very seriously, and the amount of planning that has gone into this DJ Kicks mix is abundantly clear. Emotionally it feels very well judged, with Holden cranking up the tension by not letting the full beats drop until considerably later in the mix, so that a lot of time is spent building up through tracks like Caribou’s ‘Lemon Yoghurt’, Kieran Hebden and Steve Reid’s ‘Departure’ and Mit’s ‘Rauch’. When the pressure gives, as it does on Legowelt’s ‘Flight Of The Jupiter’, the effect is ecstatic – and puts the lid on one of the best DJ Kicks of recent years.
