The joy of Fabric’s ongoing mix odyssey of the 2000s and beyond is the way they consistently go beyond predictable directions. It means one month we get Shackleton, the next we get Chicago house music doyen Derrick Carter, doing what he does best with music that has more bounce than Tigger. >From the outset his intriguing combinations of drum pads, claps and snatches of speech and other rhythms grabs the imagination, settling into a real groove with Scope’s ‘8 Track’ and Cricco Castelli’s ‘First Love’, both tracks that nick snippets of disco through their string and sax riffs respectively. As the mix progresses so the bassline assumes greater importance, and Tripmastaz’ ‘Back On My BS’ and Piek’s ‘La Gondola’ throw out some wonderfully curved examples. Through the mix Carter dips in and out of his own remix of Green Velvet’s ‘La La Land’, Dennis Ferrer’s ‘Church Lady’ and Warren Fellow’s ‘Got A Soul’, using each of them to unite the mix as it spreads its feelgood vibe. Clever, and highly infectious with it.
