Any other week and this would be a shoe-in for compilation of the week – but make no mistake, the latest DJ Kicks is a cracker. Danilo Plessow resides in Germany’s very own motor city, Stuttgart, but in his mix he draws on the heritage of that and the other motor city across the Atlantic, Detroit. Opting to start with some lower key dub, Plessow gradually adds components of funk to start speeding things up, and it’s all so cleverly done that it’s difficult to spot the join. By the time we get to Stone’s ‘Girl I Like The Way That You Move’ and Fred P’s ‘On This Vibe’ he’s moving through the gears nicely, shifting towards techno as the mix gains warmth and more percussion. And then, the killer move, injecting more cutting edge to the kick drum as the killer loops of Philippe Sarde’s ‘Le Cortège Et Course’ make themselves known. Topping off a beautifully paced mix are the vocal hooks of Recloose’s ‘Cardiology’ and a nice bit of cosmic disco to finish with in the form of James Mason’s ‘Sweet Power, Your Embrace’. All that’s left to do is start the mix again – a really excellent contribution to a series that continues to thrive.
