If Mary J Blige’s overblown position of ‘queen of hip-hop soul’ were ever contested, Veba, as greater a contributor to Grand Central’s finest moments down the years than anyone, would justifiably wear the crown better. A voice of strength on several levels (compare the striking tones of ‘Spellbound’, the levitation over ‘Swansong’ and a more careful approach to Tony D’s ‘Don’t Want to Lose You’), the chemistry between her and GC mainstays Fingathing, Only Child and of course, Northern sulphuric sleepwalkers Rae & Christian has Veba ruling some of the coolest music going.
