Trainspotting with The Phantom

Big tunes from the big hitters…

01. The Phantom – Personality
A new one from me, a sample-based, Earth People influenced DJ tool.

02. Parris Mitchell – All Night Long feat. Reggie Hall
A very on-point reissue from Wicked Bass, backed with a new track from the old Dance Mania master and remixes by Bok Bok. Feels amazingly fresh.

03. Raz – Amour Puetro Riqueno (Spanish Club Mix)
A stripped down percussive jam. Bought this record for 1 Buck.

04. Chicago Traxmen – We Live This Life
Paul Johnson goes hard on this one.

05. Syclops – Jump Bugs
Reminds me of Mr. Finger’s ‘Washing Machine’ a bit. The whole album is amazing. Forms a new definition of ‘fusion’.

06. Paranoid London – Paris Dub 1
I was late for the first round of vinyls, but finally copped this a month ago. Very nervous, yet ethereal at the same time.

07. Pvre Gold – Walkabout
Hazy, late night jam. I love every second of it.

08. Hound Scales – Surrender Dorothy
Edgy house music soaked in cold synthesizers.

09. Ikonika – Sea Synths
An older surreal dub by Ikonika, now given away for free (look for ‘Lost Dubs’).

10. The Phantom – When I Found Out (Medlar Remix)
Great job by Medlar. I love its late night melancholic mood.

The Phantom
EP 3
(Silverback Recordings)

Bartosz Kruczynski aka The Phantom is recognized as a driving force in Poland’s electronic music output with releases for Catz N’ Dogz’ Pets Recordings and Marcin Czubula’s Your Mama’s Friend. Silverback Recordings embrace an unbiased approach with their output, releasing a widespread variety of electronic music from house and techno through to new-breed Garage from artists such as the much-hyped British producer Jack Dixon and France’s Jean Nipon.
‘Personality’ opens the release here, an old school inspired, sample-based cut with a stripped down 90’s house feel. Resonant synth lines, funky organ licks, hi strings and a filter-house vocal line make up the track and The Phantom displays his ability to compose deep, emotive house with distinctiveness.
Next up is ‘La Defense’ a low-slung track with pulsating bass warbles, warm, organic piano melodies and a swarming arpeggiated synth line. Off-kilter shuffling snare rolls add a broken-beat swing to the cut and squelchy chorus modulation further fuels its inventive feel, the result is once again something classy and rather unique.
‘EP 3’ is concluded with ‘Body Fantastic’; bright, soothing synth chords and an insistent rolling percussion movement drives the track. It’s 2-step, dub style drums give the cut a forward thinking feel as does this Polish producers evident ability to create musical harmony, manipulating the melodic elements to react to one another in a call and response fashion brilliantly.

The Phantom’s ‘EP 3’ is out now on Silverback Recording.
