The level of quality here is as rare as hen’s penis. Subtitled ‘A Collection Of Classics’, it’s a superlative selection on all levels. It’s main attribute is that all expectations of hacking out a cutting edge set are out the window in favour of picking the records which Mr Digweed has loved and played in his formative years. It’s all a matter of taste, and he has it in buckets. The two CDs are studded with classics which mainly date from the first half of the nineties. Tunes which wrecked the vibrant scene of that time and helped create a sebnse of constant discovery that has all but vanished now. Names like One Dove, Underworld, Smith & Mighty, Young American Primitive, DSK and even Euphoria’s amazing ‘Mercurial’, one of the greatest trance classics of all time. Then there are surprises which work surprisingly well, like Morales mixing INXS or the Peech boys’ early 80s groundbreaker ‘Don’t Make Me Wait’. And I now realise it’s twelve years ago that I made this thing called ‘Sugar Daddy’ on CD2! This set is beyond the usual ‘great compilation accolades’. it’s pure history paying tribute to
many unsung tunes in the process. Hats off, trousers down, thumbs up.
