Eat Lights Become Lights – Modular Living – Rocket Girl

The influence of Krautrock on today’s electronic music is pretty massive, and when you get to the music of Eat Lights Become Lights, it’s almost overwhelming. But this is not a tribute album at all, or an attempt to rediscover lost glories. Eat Lights Become Lights is a band led by Neil Rudd, for whom this blend of driving beats and bass with more ambient atmospheres works best. To get his dense and beautifully layered soundscapes Rudd uses analogue and digital synths, as well as guitar, bass and drums, which means there is usually a lot going on in the listener’s ear, even when the mood is relaxation. This works especially well with the evocatively named ‘Rowley Way Overlook’, but also with ‘MOD-ULO-510’, which oscillates softly but firmly. A heady piece of work that should be powerful live, but which sets a mood quickly and effectively for home listening.
