Various Artists – 12″ 80s Club Classics – UMC

Believe it or not this is the tenth release in the 12” series, which is proved to be impressively popular among people like me who have been seeking certain records they grew up with. This is another triple header that focuses on club classics from the 80s, and although at times it might sound like an extended listen to Heart FM’s club classics slot, there is plenty here for everyone. Heart wouldn’t play Eric B & Rakim or Bomb The Bass, that’s for sure – and Grandmaster Flash, Marshall Jefferson and Inner City ensure a healthy inclusion of big, genuine club anthems from later in the decade. If you want to go a bit more soulful there’s always the Alexander O’Neal classic ‘Criticize’ or Cameo’s ‘She’s Strange’, or a slow disco edge can be found with Carly Simon’s ‘Why’ and Loose Ends’ ‘Hanging On A String’. All are in extended mix form – of course – so there is plenty of indulgence to be had. It may be mostly mainstream but it’s a very decent anthology.
