The London-based Dummy website launched five years ago, so this is a good point for them to make a collection of new tracks for the year ahead. While ‘pop’ is their watchword they allow for plenty of flexibility within that. Of the best songs here, Álauda’s ‘Falling Star’ has a nice breezy feeling to it but with the sense that something darker might be lurking in the background. Amateur Best’s ‘Create Your Love’ has an appealing, loping beat, a warm, soulful centre and a devastatingly catchy chorus, while the East India Youth remix of Empress Of’s ‘Realize You’ builds to something pretty big and impressive. Meanwhile Mokadem’s ‘Nothing’ dazzles with its clattering rhythms and shimmering keyboards. Plenty of variety here then, which is of course the spice of life – in pop music and otherwise!
