Various Artists – Ralph Lawson – Content – (2020 Vision)

Ralph Lawson should be commended for his achievements with 2020 Vision, who have now clocked up an impressive 20 years as a label – which in dance music terms is several lifetimes. Lawson is of course a highly respected DJ himself, so who better to put together his own label’s anniversary compilation? As it turns out it’s the first of these three discs that is mixed, while the other two offer a selection of rarities and newer tracks, suggesting the label has a lot more legs in it yet – which of course is what we want to hear. On the mixed CD itself, Lawson wastes no time in getting straight out of the blocks with the Colors in Waves remix of Art Of Tones’ ‘Praise’. There are two particularly fine remixes in this set, from Matthew Herbert – taking on Maya Jane Coles’ ‘Senseless’ – and Pezzner’s remix of 2020Soundsystem’s own ‘I Don’t Know. Simian Mobile Disco’s celebratory contribution ‘Parson’s Nose’ is a cracker too, coming as it does off the back of Cassy’s remix of David Duriez’ ‘Get On Down’. These three tracks appear in unmixed form elsewhere, as does the powerful ‘Adam’ by Eats Everything and Tom Trago’s rumbling remix of Wulf n Bear’s ‘Raptures of The Deep’, a great way to end. Proof positive that while we should wish 2020 happy 20th, we should join them in looking forward to a bright future in house.
