The third album of diggin’ in the crates classics from the legendary Verve jazz vaults combined with a contemporary cosmetic makeover for a new generation in an equally new style, is every bit as good as what’s gone before. The paring of Sarah Vaughan’s 50 year old stand ‘Fever’ in the hands of breakbeat general Adam Freeland might sound like sacrilege to the purist amongst you, but in reality it works, and extremely well too. Recently the Audio Bulleys have sampled Nancy Sinatra and Mint Royale Gene Kelly, so this really shouldn’t come as any shock. Elsewhere on the sampler Groove Armada’s Tom Findlay offers a slightly surreal and ‘Flawless’-ish remix of Shirley Horn’s ‘Come Dance With Me’ (but why did he leave the clashing piano in the mix’); RSL breathe hip new life into the be-bop standard ‘Sing, Sing, Sing’ and Jimmy Smith’s Hammond frenzy ‘Stay Loose’ gets the Fat Boy Slim treatment from Lyrics Born. Love it or loathe it, it’s inevitable.
