Edmonton duo Purity Ring are back with a second album – and having established a very distinctive sound with their 2012 debut ‘Shrines’, they build on that originality with ‘Another Eternity’. There is a lot of unresolved tension in this music, with massive R&B beats supporting full bodied bass sounds and a widescreen texture that plays into singer Megan James’s hands. Many of the songs have a powerful core – ‘Push Pull’ and ‘Stranger Than Earth’ especially – but while James’s intense and very intimate lyrics might not charm everyone in ‘Repetition’, their fairy tale elements bring a nice whimsy to songs like ‘Stillness In Woe’. ‘Another Eternity’ does not represent a massive change from the template the band established first time around, but it hones their style and sound in a largely successful way.
