Various Artists – Kitsuné New Faces II – (Kitsuné)

Kitsuné are an impressively diverse label these days, and a listen to this year’s ‘New Faces’ compilation confirms a willingness to go quite a long way from their dance roots. As if to emphasise this they start with Beau’s ‘One Wing’, which is transported through time from the 1970s but is done well. Some very serviceable pop follows in the shape of ‘Shot’ by Too Be Frank, which has some nice garage overtones, but is ultimately overshadowed by the classy ‘Look In Vain’ from Hot Chip offshoots New Build. ‘Last Love’ a brooding number. One Bit’s ‘Won’t Hold Back’ is a nice piece of quite introverted club pop. Big, bold pop of Monogram’s ‘Minerals’. Pawws’ softly voiced ‘Turnaround’ has strong (and very nice) hints of St Etienne, while Mura Masa’s ‘Shibuya’ sparkles as a closing bonus track on the CD. Good to see a label so refreshingly open with their new music policy, for with Kitsuné there really is no knowing who or what they will uncover next!
