Nocturnal Sunshine – Nocturnal Sunshine – (I/AM/ME)

Maya Jane Coles suitably alter-ego provides the cover for this excellent long player that isn’t afraid to shy away from the dancefloor to deliver probing, thought-provoking music outside of being fixated on peak-time formula. The benefit of which results in this tastefully crafted selection of sights and sounds that feels richly deep on ‘Believe’ featuring Chelou’s emotive vocals but also fuzzy and darkly atmospheric on ‘Down By The River’ with Catnapp. Even with a track called, ‘Bass Bin’ the reference is more about Jamaica than it is Ibiza. It’s only towards the completion of the album does the music move into more familiar territory with the closing, ‘Hotel’ sounding particularly tempting with soaring, brooding basslines and punchy beats amid the hyper-talented vocalists playful melodies.
