If you’re after something that has a Balearic flavour, may I heartily recommend this new singer-songwriter album. Chris Duncan is very much a one man band, recording from his Glasgow bedroom studio, and building up a richly coloured template as he does so. The songs he writes are lyrically profound and benefit from gorgeous harmonic twists at their centre, as they do in the wonderful songs ‘Novices’, ‘For’, ‘Garden’ and ‘Silence And Air’. There are shades of much older songwriters here – a bit of Paul Simon and even The Cyrkle – but Duncan imposes his own style, his multi-layered vocals and keyboard textures blending to consistently strong effect. Buy this album and I’ll guarantee you fall under its spell after a few listens, especially if you try it either end of the day.
