Two discs of bygone gems in a Mastercuts-stylee, and proof that there’re still beat cellar and basement scourers out there who can make an overdone concept like this stand out from the crowd. The slant isn’t on being totally obscure (though these are always a good source to see who’s been nifty with their samplers down the years), but not draining the usual resources, so the likes of The Four Tops, Bobby Womack, Curtis Mayfield and Teddy Pendergrass are on an equal footing with the massed ranks all getting their shine. Comprehensive and a class apart.
