Mirror System is the ambient sibling of Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy’s System 7, and it shows all the qualities you’d expect – Hillage in particular has been in the music game long enough to qualify for a lifetime achievement award. The sound is typified by floaty textures, keyboard lines drifting in and out of focus, and beats that have a reassuring firmness to them. This works especially well in the opening Cloud II, where a subterranean bass note supports the music throughout, and also in a classy, sultry cover of Jam & Spoon’s ‘Stella’, some wonderful Spanish guitar work turning up the heat. Still relevant, by no means hippified and outclassing much of the chillout competition.
