We haven’t heard much from the SSD boys for a while. Well that’s because they’ve been putting together a series of tracks for their new Payback Project label. They’ve gathered together a bunch of MC’s, singers and producers from all over the place to collaborate on a collection of releases no doubt centred around their inimitable sleazy-funk fuelled brand of breaks. First release is fittingly supplied by the ‘Deluxe themselves and is all that you want and expect from one of their tracks. Huge dollops of full-fat funk throbbing all the way through and the dogs wotsits of a breakdown and drop! There’s a MC vocal at the beginning courtesy of Mantis that is not dissimilar to previous collaborator, Chickaboo, if you like that kind of thing. A Smithmonger remix provides the alternative and is what you’d expect from this very busy man; Chunky, synthy with a touch of vocal trick-techery to mangle the MC into a small, malfunctioning girl-child robot.
