Simon Field is a veteran music producer, making electronic pop music for various artists over two decades. His tracks have featured in film and TV including the Academy Award nominated film ‘Passenger’ to the DJs sets of Tiesto and The Dixon Brothers to name a few. Also an influential tastemaker, Simon is responsible for breaking tracks via his ‘Ibiza Deep House’ playlist on Spotify, the longest running collection of music paying homepage to the White Isle with over 320,000 followers.
Hot off the heels of making history as the first DJ to play at the top of the majestic Ulriken mountain in Bergen, Norway as the country celebrated coming out of lockdown, and to mark the release of his new single ‘Sirens’, we got Simon to don his selector hat and tell us the tracks he’s tipping to be big this year.
“I have so many songs and artists that I love and could talk about for different reasons. Here is just a sample of the huge amount of talent out there whom I think are contributing to shape the future. I also see some great changes in music consumption during the COVID pandemic. It seems that slower beats and more vocal driven songs are getting more attention as post-lockdown sees smaller groups of people congregate. Also, it seems that club charts are less reflected on Spotify charts, but then I might be wrong…!”
Simon Field – Sirens ft Yasmine Jane
This song was written in London in February and is a rather dark breakup-song using imageries straight out of what could have been domestic abuse. Also, somehow, it was foreshadowing the global situation we have been under last few months. Obviously, the beat is meant to drive a club-floor but seems to work equally well on Spotify.
Disclosure – Get Close
One of my all-time favourite duos is back. They keep it house, they keep analogue and most of all they take their position as artists seriously, pushing the limits and stretching formats. If it wasn’t for artists like Disclosure chasing uniqueness we would stagnate.
Shai T – Where The Heart Is
A beautiful deep house / Afro house cross over. There are so many great artists within this genre, Shai T being one of them. Looping back to my reflections post COVID, I think we will see more of this kind surfacing as lounging becomes a great part of clubbing.
Mirko & Meek – Like This
A classic opener for a house set. Despite having many familiar elements to it, it’s not that well known. In fact, I don’t understand why this track isn’t more widely played. To me this one is a winner!
Tame Impala – Tomorrow’s Dust
This is an odd one but let me explain. Tame Impala is an amazing producer and top of the iceberg for producers taking up more and more space on the airwaves. Many of these guys are touching on disco, funk and soul, and I think it’s just a matter of time before one of them breaks into the club scene. Tomorrow’s Dust features on his recent album, Slow Rush.
Cristoph – Starcourt
I really want to highlight Cristoph in this article. For his continuous output of high-quality tracks and for sticking with his guns. I’ve loved every single one of his releases for many years. Starcourt is a great example of his solid work. Keep it up!
Elderbook – Numb
I nearly fainted when I first heard this one – it really touched me. Consider the huge success with Cola and other tracks, it’s a huge task to deliver new tracks. This one REALLY has it all – beat and an insane vocal and great songwriting.
Maurice Fulton & Peggy Gou – Jigoo
Peggy has single-handedly put herself on top of the worldwide DJ map! I’m sure she has an amazing team, but her output is speaking for itself. Borrowing from all sorts of genres and creating something truly unique. Massive respect. Goes to show that creativity and uniqueness beats anything else!
The Vision ft Andreya Triana – Mountains
This list is NOT complete without a release from Defected. They are leading the way in so many ways including what they do for their artists and house music as a movement. I’ve picked this one featuring one of my favourite singers, who I also had the pleasure of collaborating with on my track Wildfire.
ZHU – Came For The Low
Like with all ZHU tracks this is probably the most forward pointing for me. ZHU takes massive musical chances and with such confidence. This is a regular, early on when I do tech sets. Thanks ZHU for showing us where the rest of us will be in 2-3 years’ time!
