Back in the early 90s when breaks, fledgling progressive house and ever-reliable Detroit were the strains hitting underground clubs, cutting edge DJs like Weatherall and Vath homed in on a remarkable series of 12s by a bunch calling themselves Holy Ghost inc. ‘Mad Monks On Zinc’ caused a stir and still sounds fresh with its subterranean pulse, ethereal piano line and strange samples. Now it’s been reactivated with the original joined by two modern techno remixes from Adultnapper – deep, minimal builder with old school bassline – and Martin Buttrick, who throws in a gamut of sonic washes, marimba action and weird melodies. No sign of that piano though. A genuine classic done justice and still as startling.
