Widescreen is an option for this extraordinary pair of mixes from Joris Voorn, but you’d be well advised to use it, since he gets through no fewer than 102 tracks in the course of two and a half hours. That’s not through criminally underplaying each track, it’s through a skilful blend of sounds that always puts the music first, with a sonic treat for the listener resulting. Voorn’s grasp of how things sound is extraordinary, so that we get some super-clear breakdowns made up of several elements, before the beats come back again. The only slight trouble with this is found in tracks like Goldie’s ‘Inner City Life’, where the strings shimmer but the beats don’t arrive – arguably an example of one stop-start too many. Yet we should applaud Voorn for being so inventive, and bringing a new approach to the table.
