Steppas’ Delight 2
Soul Jazz

The second collection of dubstep from Soul Jazz is every bit as good as the first, imaginative and forward thinking in its choices and music. Brooding inner city soundscapes and bouncy, energetic beats feature frequently, but there’s a lot of originality in the way producers like Shed, LD and Dusk treat their instrumental forces. The dark textures and chattering rhythms of D1’s ‘Oingie Boingie’ are a highlight of the first CD, while Gemmy’s ‘Supligen’ is a curious oddity – in a good way – on the second. While established producers such as Martyn and Benga make their mark, this is about the wave of relatively unknown producers who are making finely crafted, darkly energetic music. Dubstep perhaps, but pushing all sorts of boundaries, and an invigorating listen as a result.
