Soma

Every now and again Soma take time out from the assorted excursions and explorations which are necessary to keep the creative fires burning and electronic smorgasbord widening to remind everybody what they do best: innovative, often jaw-dropping, techno of the first degree, maintaining the tradition which fuelled Soma on its rise through the 90s. The label also seems to effortlessly and relentlessly discover amazing new talent. Sometimes these two elements collide beautifully, such as this third EP from Harvey, trailering his highly-impressive debut album due in December. The title track is full-on techno belter, built on a shuffling pounder of a groove which accommodates 90s-style, snarling hoover-hardcore motifs and aural cloud formations. Gary Beck’s remix is an ominous bass stalker elevated by heavenly pads. Meanwhile, the atmospheric ‘Vessel’ is gentler, pattering and ethereal, with ‘Melt’ taking the EP out on a high-octane turbo-charge with ‘French Kiss’ riff mutation and doomy voice. Now wait for the album.
