1. MODERAT – A New Error
This never fails to fill me with hope.
2. MINUTEMEN – History Lesson Part 2
A touching song about friends and the past – makes me nostalgic.
3. THE FOCUS GROUP – Reflected Message
From label Ghost Box Records who feature artists like Pye Corner Audio and Belbury Poly. Like a misremembered school science programme – full screen the video and open your text books at page 39.
4. REX THE DOG – Sicko
I love this track – amusing and smart in equal parts.
5. COCTEAU TWINS – Sugar Hiccup
Even though I know the lyrics to this I like that they still don’t make sense.
6. SD LAIKA – Great God Pan
A friend sent this track to me recently – strange and fractured but in a really controlled way.
7. LAURIE ANDERSON – O Superman
How is this sample still so compelling?
8. SERGE GAINSBOURG – Chanson de Maglia
Serge Gainsbourg often gets characterised by the more salacious and risqué songs but this one is full of genuine devotion and feeling.
9. XXYYXX – About You
Exists in a place where all words are lost. This isn’t the artist’s video but it suits it perfectly.
10. BULGARIAN STATE TELEVISION FEMALE VOCAL CHOIR – Kalimankou Denkou
We had the album this song comes from ‘Les Mysteres des Voix Bulgaires’ in my house growing up and this was a big favourite, full of incredible and unexpected harmonies.
