Back To Mine with Birdee

Birdee is the alias of Italian DJ/ producer Marcello De Angelis, a man who is flying high right now off the back of his recent LP, ‘Then Came the Sun’. Featuring the track, ‘Movin On’, the EP was released in January and went to no. 1 on Traxsource’s Indie Disco / Nu Dance chart, while also amassing over 150k Spotify streams during that time. Aside from the aforementioned accolades, his music has also been supported by luminaries of the scene such as Purple Disco Machine, Pete Tong, Mistajam and Horse Meat Disco. We got in touch recently for his Back 2 Mine chart. As you might imagine, it’s a collection of brilliant tracks that pays homage to his Italian roots, with some classic disco tracks involved. Turn these ones up loud!

LTJ EXPERIENCE – NO RHYME NO REASON

Luca Trevisi aka LTJ Experience is a true legend of the Italian dance music underground…this track is a perfect late nite groover and just makes you want to kick back and relax. A classic on Irma Records, still love it!

LTJ X-perience - No rhyme no reason

TULLIO DE PISCOPO – STOP BAJON

Now a bonafide balearic classic, I remember hearing this when I was 13 or 14 and instantly falling in love with it…something really special about this song. Written by the late great Pino Daniele.

Tulio De Piscopo - Stop Bajon Original 12 inch Version 1984

LUCIO BATTISTI – ANCORA TU

Championed by Aeroplane in his sets, I remember being blown away when I heard him play this song – I had been hearing it so much when I was growing up but never thought of playing it out. If you go to any bar in Italy in the summer, and the vibe is right and it’s very late, there is a very good chance you will hear this. Beautiful love song.

NU GUINEA – JE VULESSE

This only came out last year but already has the makings of a proper classic late night record. The new sound of Naples.

Nu Guinea - Je Vulesse

PINO D’ANGIO’ – MA QUALE IDEA

The bassline was sampled by Madison Avenue for their hit Don’t Call Me Baby. This was a big hit in early 80’s discos all over Italy, such a groove!

Pino D'Angio - Ma Quale Idea

RAINBOW TEAM – TELL ME

Another early 80’s Italian production, this came from the Goody Music/Full Time Records and still sounds very fresh!

Rainbow Team - Tell Me (Italo Disco-Funk 1981)

GRUPPO ITALIANO – TROPICANA

I love playing this when people come back to mine, for real, because it’s such a cheesy song yet everyone loves it…proper Italo guilty pleasure from back in the day

KANO – I’M READY

An Emergency records classic, I still love to play this out – at the right time it just works. And of course it’s great for a late night session too.

CHANGE – PARADISE

Change did so many amazing songs, but to me there’s something truly special about this one…it has more of a “chugging” Italo groove compared to their other disco classics. Another classic Italian production.

Change - Paradise (LP Version)

JOLLY MUSIC FT. ERLEND ØYE  – TALCO UNO

Jolly Music blew me away when they stormed the dance music scene 15 years ago or so, paving the way for Tiger & Woods – in fact they were very closely linked with Marco Passarani who is one half of T&W. This track with Erlend Øye from Kings of Convenience is lush!
