Donald Fagen – The Goodbye Look
Could be any track from this album. This song is like being pulled into a novel.
Donny Hathaway – Love, Love, Love
One of the most soothing tracks I know. Donny is my favourite vocalist of all time. This song is a fine example of his ability to truly make someone else’s song his own.
Earth, Wind & Fire – That’s The Way of The World
This is one of those songs that I want to hear in just about any setting. I gotta mention how sublime Verdine’s bassline is here, it’s got a funky way of playing minor under major chords that is so undeniably cool.
Emily King – Distance
Soulful and intimate. I wish Prince covered this song.
Frank Ocean – Sierra Leone
Vivid songwriting and ruthlessly lean. Never fails to give me chills.
Idris Muhammad – Loran’s Dance
Hard to choose between this and Grover Washington Jr.’s version, but an absolute gem of 70s soul jazz.
Janelle Monae – Neon Valley Street
I love how simultaneously futuristic and retro this song is. Love the arrangement and Janelle’s flawless melismatic inflections.
Jesse Boykins III – Amorous
A friend put me on to this album a while back. Love the dissonance with the strings in the bridge.
Jessie Ware – Sweet Talk
Jessie Ware always brings the class. All kinds of nods to Prince’s production but something completely it’s own.
Pharrell – Freq
Hypnotic and inventive. Pharrell’s affinity for Stevie Wonder really shows on the B section!
