01. Just Kissed My Baby – The Meters – Rhino/Wea.
Weep. If there is anything wrong with this record can someone point it out to us please? No? Course not. Straight up and down groover with THAT guitar riff.
02. Trouble – Ray Lamontagne – 14th Floor.
Why isn’t this guy massive? This track is sublime. Everyone should listen to more Ray, go and buy all of his music now.
03. Duppy Conqueror – Bob Marley and the Wailers – Island.
Less conspicuous than some of his songs, but familiar in it’s sound, this one has everything and goes on for ages which is all you want it to do.
04. Check The Rhyme – A Tribe Called Quest – Jive.
We remember exactly what we were doing when we first heard this. ATCQ were already our favourite group, and this just continued to confirm them as the best hip-hop band there has ever been
05. All I Want – Joni Mitchell – Reprise.
If you haven’t checked out this incredible artist then you’re seriously missing out. She should be as big as Bob Dylan. Unmatched vocal dexterity and razor sharp song writing. It’s impossible not to like this record. Test yourself.
06. Les Fleurs – Minnie Ripperton – EMI.
Tripped out bliss. This much sampled, much loved classic needs no description or introduction. A great introduction to Ripperton’s music, there’s no questioning why this song gets so much love.
07. Unchained Melody – Al Green – Hi.
Some covers beat the original, and some sound like they aren’t even covers. This guy makes this song his own more than anyone else who has ever tried.
08. I Wish I Didn’t Miss You Any More – Angie Stone – Underground Access.
Cleverly sampling the O’Jays and displaying Ms Stone’s unbelievable vocals, this has ended many a late night Nextmen set.
09. Two Can Win – JayDee – Stones Throw.
The old master rips it up with an infectious sped-up vocal, heavy sample based groove and not a rapper in sight. Genius.
10. I Get Lifted — KC And The Sunshine Band – TK
The best cover of a brilliant song. Bursting with tight, riff based funk, this track is equally effective on the dancefloor or on your home stereo. This is one that should be in everyone’s collection.
