Back To Mine With Nolan

Since their first release in 2009, Nolan and Amber Jolene have worked on many successful projects together and have racked up well over 20 million YouTube views. Nolan is a real underground mainstay who has landed on the scene’s most vital labels from Mobilee to Renaissance to Bedrock, while Amber has been voicing sublime house sounds for the likes of Defected and playing all over the world for more than 20 years. As their new release, ‘Can You Feel This‘, drops on Sasha’s LNOE label, DMCWorld goes back to mine with Nolan.

Flip Fantazia  – Hombre

Can I slip one of my side projects in here?! It’s on a downtempo tip and is from our Flip Fantazia album called The Trip. Track 1 is called Hombre and is a kind of nod to early DJ Shadow.. (the word ombre means shade in French). It came out on vinyl over lockdown so is a couple of years old now but Huey Morgan named this track his ‘Beat of the Week’ on his 6 Music show just the other week which made us very happy indeed.

Trentemøller – Miss You

One of the most spellbinding tracks ever made by one of my biggest inspirations. This piece of music instantly calms me and gives me the feels!

The Doors – Riders On The Storm

Jim Morrison & Ray Manzarek had something purely magical when they performed together as this absolute classic record proves!

Pink Floyd – The Great Gig In The Sky

Another classic from around the time I was born which just raises every hair on the back of my neck and is often played on my decks at home. In fact here’s the 50th Anniversary Remaster (gulp!) 😲

Zero 7 ft. Mozez – Warm Sound

My own back to mine sessions in the early 2000’s always featured the Simple Things and When It Falls albums by Zero 7. I love the songs featuring both Sia and Sophie Barker but it’s the warm dulcet tones of Mozez that really capture me with this particular song. So much so that I asked him to sing on one of our new Flip Fantazia track which I’m excited to say he has done… More news on that soon.

AIR – All I Need (feat. Beth Hirsch)

Back in 1997 I bought ‘Premiers Symptômes’, which at the time I believed was AIR’s 1st ever album having heard their song Casanova 70 on a superb VA album called Source Lab2 the previous year. It featured a beautiful guitar riff right at the end of the track called ‘Les professionnels’ which Beth Hirsch heard and then created the top line to ‘All I Need’ over, which then featured on Moon Safari, their official debut album.

Serge Gainsbourg – Melody

The birth of Trip-Hop some might say?! Well Tricky and Massive Attack both sampled the beats from this 1971 classic Gainsbourg masterpiece. Another firm favorite when living in Paris in the early 90’s and coming back for some after hours action!

Sébastien Tellier – La Ritournelle

One of my favourite ever piano riffs layered over a superb breakbeat performed by Fela Kuti’s drummer Tony Allen (RIP). I loved this so much I learned to play it on the piano, then programmed some of my own drums in Logic to practice playing it over, then added some strings to layer it up and make it sound a bit more like the original. Then I decided to record myself playing it in and before I knew it I had a full on cover version of Tellier’s song. Only I didn’t dare take on those vocals! To my surprise my instrumental version then went on to feature on Cafe del Mar, Hotel es Vivé, Savannah and a few other Ibiza sunset compilations at the time too.

Djuma Soundsystem – Les Djinns (Trentemøller Remix)

Another piece of Trentemøller bliss this time in the form of a remix which transformed this club track into something unreal. It’s a shame it got the guys in trouble with copyright infringement on the publishing side, especially since they cleared the master recording sample from what I can remember. Anyway it’s one of those tracks that featured in DJs sets no matter what genre they normally played!

Frankie Knuckles – The Whistle Song

As it looks like I commented on this exact YouTube video 10 years ago under my old Timo Garcia name. This is “pretty much the best House record ever made” and one which I bought 3 times on vinyl because I kept wearing it out!
