DMCWORLD AWARDS 2016 – JONTY SCRUFFF

Tune:
Steve Parry – Apricity (Victor Ruiz Remix)/ SELADOR
Victor Ruiz has been on fire this year and has produced dozens of tech-house bombs; this one fitted into all sorts of sets and was also great for looping and layering; a top track of the summer.
Album:
Wareika: the Magic Number (Visionquest)
Includes some achingly beautiful downtempo club tunes that worked perfectly in afterhours sets at Katerblau’s Kiosk and Sisyphos’ beach. The sound of (Berlin) outdoor day time summer.
Remix:
Agoria; Independence (Stephan Barnem Remix)
I love this remix in particular for its fantastic breakdown which combines epic arpeggios with microlight super-quiet clicks: perfect for looping and stretching and creating magical moments.
Best label:
Innervisions
It was a toss-up between Drumcode and Innervisions and Innervisions clinched it more on timing, courtesy of their new label compllation which includes some simple but stunningly beautiful deep tech classics, all of which seem to work on every kind of dancefloor. Serious quality.
Best breakthrough label:
Snatch!
Snatch! Have been relentless master purveyors of smashing, jacking, dirty house this year delivering bomb after bomb throughout the year.
Best Producer:
Viktor Ruiz
Sure the Brazilian maestro could be accused of following a formula (or two) but when the beats, grooves, breakdowns and melodies are as relentlessly fantastic (and effective) as his, then repetition not only makes sense but it welcomed. A serious talent.
Festival:
Milkshake Festival, Amsterdam
I played here for the second time this summer and absolutely loved it, in particular for its crowd which comprised an amazing mix of queer, alternative, flamboyant freaks  or all ages and all sexual persuasions. And everyone was friendly and seriously up to party. Fantastic.
Music Conference:
Paris Electronic Music Week
A small but very interesting event with lots of great speakers and events throughout Paris’ fascinating club scene. Being small, it’s easy to properly meet and connect with people there and Paris itself is always interesting to visit.
Radio Show:
Berlin Soul (our show)
OK, I’m totally biased here, but I do really enjoy doing our weekly show- archived editions are here: http://www.mixcloud.com/jontyskrufff/ )
Mainstage DJ:
No particular favourite here.
Resident DJ:
Fidelity Kastrow (Sisyphos)
OK I’m biased her too but my Berlin Berlin/ Sisyphos compadre Fidelity really is one of my favourite DJs to dance to- she’s got great taste and sequences superbly, packing in emotion and personality into her sets like no-one else I’ve seen.
Club: Berghain
Yes it’s incredibly hyped (and equally hated seemingly by many who’ve never been there) but I love the club’s vibe and attitude and have had some great times this year, both from enjoying DJs’ sets and meeting friends.
New Studio Equipment/Software:
Pioneer DJ Toraiz SP-16
A great new machine which I aim to start using as a drum machine next year and really incorporating it into my set.
Personal highlight of 2016:
Spinning at Concrete for the first time. I was actually really, really ill beforehand and should have stayed in bed but I didn’t want to miss the opportunity and for two hours had the time of my life (and felt great). Afterwards was a different story . . .”
Your ambition for 2017 . . .
To see Donald Trump impeached . . .”
